Biodynamic® Agriculture

Blending the forces of nature.

In 1980 Clean Foods, Inc. introduced Cafe Altura, the first "organically" grown coffee, into the United States. Continuing in our efforts to support sustainable agriculture Clean Foods and the Finca Irlanda farm in Chiapas, Mexico, introduced the first "biodynamically" grown coffee into the United States in 1993.

Biodynamics is an evolved system of organic agriculture developed by the Austrian philosopher, Dr. Rudolph Steiner. While Steiner worked in many fields, our customers may be somewhat familiar with his theories in education utilized by the many Waldorf schools across North America.

This distinctive form of farming blends the forces of nature with the influences of the moon and stellar constellations. Certain aspects of the farm's work is timed to coincide with the cycles of the moon and its relation to the Zodiac signs. The farm is viewed as a whole organism and is virtually self-contained.

Approaching agriculture this way requires a new way of understanding nature. Biodynamic farming calls for certain preparations to be used to aid in plant development. Specially developed compost containing twelve different herbal preparations is used for plant nutrition and soil development.

Biodynamic farming serves as a valuable model as the world of agriculture seeks active, successful programs that prolong soil life and plant health. The results of these efforts is coffee that has a better taste and a longer shelf life. Undoubtedly the special nurturing and care taken to grow this coffee will be tasted in every cup.
