Clean Foods, Inc. has been importing and distributing Cafe Altura since 1980. Our involvement in organically grown coffees evolved through a unique relationship with the Finca Irlanda, a Biodynamic coffee farm in Mexico. In 1982, our efforts to introduce organically grown coffee to the United States were strengthened by our contracting with the Demeter Association. The Demeter Association provides third party inspection and certification services to those farmers interested in Biodynamic farming and sustainable agriculture.
Cafe Altura farmers use organic practices that follow and foster coffee's natural cycle. Organic cultivation and fertilization provide coffee trees with the proper nutrients to produce a rich, healthy crop. Organic farming conserves and enriches valuable topsoil and enhances the long term production of each Cafe Altura farm. We closely monitor each step in the gathering, transporting and preparation of Cafe Altura. No pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers of any kind are used on Cafe Altura.
We personally ensure the integrity of every cup of Cafe Altura.
Our farms in Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Guatemala that supply us with Cafe Altura are all family owned and managed. Family owned (estate) farms are preferred for two important reasons. Each farm is managed by a family member who has learned his craft by working the same land for many generations. Each farm has its own processing facility, allowing the manager to watch over all aspects of the growing, harvesting, and processing of the coffee. In addition, the continuity and attention to detail is essential for ensuring the integrity of Cafe Altura certified organically grown coffee.
The delicate taste of coffee is affected by how it is grown. The fine taste of Cafe Altura results from the care taken to allow coffee to grow in its natural cycle. Each tree is harvested three times choosing only the ripened red berries. To bring about the fullest flavor, the coffee is soaked in rainwater and dried under the sun. Only the superior grade beans are chosen for Cafe Altura. The coffee is hand sorted to remove unevenly sized beans. This allows for consistently even roasting without a trace of bitterness from burnt beans. You can taste the special care taken to produce Cafe Altura in every drop.
