Cafe
Altura organic Mexican coffees are grown in the Sierra Madre mountains
of Chiapas, Mexico. Volcanic soils, high altitude and a variety of
shade trees offer an ideal environment for growing arabica coffees
organically and sustainably. Our Mexican coffees are known for their
light body and sweet nutty taste. All of our coffee is grown on family
owned farms. Two of our farms, the Finca Irlanda and the Rancho Alegre
are certified Biodynamic as well as Organic by the Demeter Association.

The
rich, smoky flavor of Cafe Altura Guatemalan coffee sets it apart
from other coffees and makes it easy to identify. It is spicy and
bright with a medium body.
Our Guatemalan coffee is grown by Mr. Rodolfo Ibarra on the Finca
San Juan Utapa. The farm is 40 miles southwest of Guatemala City and
the farm has been in Mr. Ibarra's family for many generations. Grown
in the central highlands the "hard bean" or "strictly
hard bean" label depends on the altitude at which it is was grown.
Some of Latin America's healthiest soil is found in Guatemala, a perfect
location to establish organic growing practices.

In
the far reaches of the South Pacific Ocean lies the Indonesian Island
of Sumatra; an exotic land of warmth and moisture ideal for growing
great coffees. The tropical environment which is farmed organically
produces a clean, straight forward coffee with a low acidity. Cafe
Altura's Regular Roast promotes the exotic flavor notes, while our
Dark Roast adds richness that blends well with the heavy, syrupy body.
This unique coffee is from the Gayo region in the northwestern corner
of Sumatra. The coffee is cultivated under ideal conditions at an
altitude of between 1200 and 1600 meters. Shade is used by the farmers
to produce food and protect the coffee trees. "Farm certified"
by a European agency, SKAL and "Process Certified" by the
Demeter Association, our Sumatran coffee is farmed by a group of 105
small village farmers under the supervision of ForesTrade Inc., a
Vermont based importer/trader of organic spices and coffees.

After
years of searching, we have found a family that has converted an old,
conventional coffee farm to one that is farming sustainably. Mesa
se los Santos is the name of the farm that began growing coffee in
1872. It is located in Northeastern Colombia in the county of of Santander,
20 kilometers south of Bucaramanga. The coffee is grown at an altitude
of 1600 meters and the area has an average yearly rainfall of 36 inches.
The Acevedo family has made a strong commitment to farming sustainably.
The farm has 91 hectares planted in coffee and maintains cattle and
chickens for compost making along with the coffee pulp. Weeds are
maintained by hand. A variety of shade trees protect the coffee trees
and provide a winter home for migrating birds.

Blend Coffee |
The
only coffee produced in the United States comes from the big island
of Hawaii. There is a small region known as the KONA COAST that produces
a truly spectacular coffee. Two unique conditions aid in the growing
of this special coffee. The trees are literally grown in volcanic
soil that is very high in nutrients. Secondly, a cloud cover forms
each afternoon around 2:00 p.m. to protect the delicate coffee trees
from the tropical sun. The coffee farms in Kona are small, usually
five to seven acres. Kona coffees are very aromatic, with a medium
body and noticeable acidity. Our Kona Blend contains 20% certified
organic Kona coffee blended with our certified organic Mexican coffees.

Fair Trade Coffee |
Our
Fair Trade Peruvian coffee comes from the Penachi region of Northern
Peru. A small numbers of families have been selected to grow Peruvian
coffee for Café Altura. Elevations of the organic coffee farms
vary between 1000 and 1500 meters and the farmers use little modern
technology to grow their crops. Our Peruvian Fair Trade Coffee is
a bright and lively coffee, with good acidity and a medium body.
